چکیده

Generic lossy image compression algorithms, such as Said & Pearlman's, perform excellently on gridded terrain elevation data. For example, an average DEM compressed down to 0.1 bits per point has an RMS elevation error of 3 meters, although di erent DEMs ranged from 0.25 to 15 meters. This performance compares favorably to compressing with Triangulated Irregular Networks. Preliminary tests also suggest that the visibility indices of the points are robust with respect to our lossy compression.

Evaluation of JPEG-LS, the new lossless and controlled-lossy still image compression standard, for compression of high-resolution elevation data

The compression of elevation data is studied in this paper. The performance of JPEG-LS, the new international ISO/ITU standard for lossless and near-lossless (controlled-lossy) still-image compression, is investigated both for data from the USGS digital elevation model (DEM) database and the navy-provided digital terrain model (DTM) data. Using JPEG-LS has the advantage of working with a standa...

Compressing Elevation Data

This paper compares several, text and image, lossless and lossy, compression techniques for regular gridded elevation data, such as DEMs. Sp compress and progcode, the best lossless methods average 2.0 bits per point on USGS DEMs, about half the size of gzipped files, and 6.2 bits per point on ETOPO5 samples. Lossy compression produces even smaller files at moderate error rates. Finally, some t...

Compressing Terrain Datasets Using Segmentation

We propose a novel compression scheme to achieve lossy compression of elevation datasets. Our scheme does not use predictors in the traditional sense. Our predictors are based on planar dataset segments. We believe that this is a far better way of expressing context in an elevation dataset since it can capture continuities in different geometries and allows us to provide an error bound on the o...

Lossless Data Compression of Grid-based Digital Elevation Models: a Png Image Format Evaluation

At present, computers, lasers, radars, planes and satellite technologies make possible very fast and accurate topographic data acquisition for the production of maps. However, the problem of managing and manipulating this data efficiently remains. One particular type of map is the elevation map. When stored on a computer, it is often referred to as a Digital Elevation Model (DEM). A DEM is usua...

ON A LOSSY IMAGE COMPRESSION/RECONSTRUCTION METHOD BASED ON FUZZY RELATIONAL EQUATIONS

The pioneer work of image compression/reconstruction based onfuzzy relational equations (ICF) and the related works are introduced. TheICF regards an original image as a fuzzy relation by embedding the brightnesslevel into [0,1]. The compression/reconstruction of ICF correspond to thecomposition/solving inverse problem formulated on fuzzy relational equations.Optimizations of ICF can be consequ...
